history/The Dutch Burghers

Dutch Burgher Union
In 1908 the “Hollandsche Burgher Vereeniging van Ceylon”, or the Dutch Burgher Union was established. Those originally accepted in the membership were from families originating from Europe – not necessarily of Dutch origin – as well as those who came through the VOC with lineage traceable to European genealogies.

Richard Gerald Anthonisz is recognised as the founder of the Dutch Burgher Union.

The Dutch Burgher Union continues to hold its own over trough the years despite the changes in the country. It headquarters is located in a beautifully renovated building at the Havelock Road in Colombo.
